Who Are Montana Rarities?

montana rarities homepage

Montana Rarities opened its doors in 2008 and is headquartered in Florence, Montana. They pride themselves on offering tangible assets for diversification.

The company provided precious metals for several years in different quantities, but the owner altered their business model. As of 2022, they provide most precious metals in smaller amounts and more frequently ship products via wholesale drop-ship services.

They no longer have a minimum purchase requirement for regular precious metals investments.

In addition, according to their most recent website updates, the owner states that the company no longer uses online marketing, and you won't see ads for the business.

What Does Montana Rarities Sell?

Montana Rarities sells a variety of precious metals, including gold, silver, and platinum. The gold coins and bullion include American Gold Eagles, American Gold Buffalos, Australian Gold Philharmonics, Canadian Maple Leaf, China Panadas, and Great Britain Gold Britannia.

They also offer gold collectibles and foreign gold such as Austria Gold 4 Ducats and Argentina Gold 5-Pesos.

Their silver includes bullion, coins, collectible silver coins, and specialty silver. Search through Monarch Silver bars, Silver Eagles, Buffalo Indian Head rounds, and Valcambi Silver Combibar.

Collectible silver includes Monarch building blocks, alien heads, and Day of the Dead Sugar Skull Rose products.

If you want to purchase platinum, rhodium, or palladium, the selections include Englehard platinum bars, Pamp Suisse bars, and Canada platinum Maple 1 Troy coins. Canadian Palladium Maple 1 Troy coins are also available.

Setting Up an Account with Montana Rarities

Montana Rarities offers a user account for your precious metals purchases. You'll provide personal details such as your name, shipping address, and phone number.

Since they accept PayPal payments, you can set up one-click payments and remain signed into PayPal through your user account.

You can add PayPal or credit card information to your user account and avoid re-entering these details each time you place an order.

The website doesn't require two-part authentication, but they encrypt your data and use secured socket layers to prevent outsider access to your user account.

However, if you want to pay for your precious metals order with a check, bank wire transfer, or money order, you should contact them to complete it. Unfortunately, their website shopping cart feature has no option for these payment methods.

Funding a Gold IRA

information about a gold ira

Montana Rarities has a gold and precious metals IRA program. Funding options for a precious metals IRA include contributions in a traditional or Roth IRA or precious metals you already own.

Most customers transfer funds from a Roth account or rollover funds from a traditional IRA into the gold IRA.

Before you get started, you must hire an IRS-approved custodian to manage all documentation and transfers. The custodian contacts your employer or the organization where you set up your current IRA.

They understand all requirements for setting up the new gold or precious metals IRS and help you review gold companies. Your custodian could coordinate these efforts with Montana Rarities and your IRA provider.

Coordinating Your Purchase for Your New IRA

Your custodian cannot choose what precious metals you buy. You'll need to find the gold company you want to use first, and they can determine if it is a scammer.

Next, if you choose Montana Rarities, look through the precious metals and make your final selections.  Once you've set up the purchase, contact your custodian to transfer funds to complete the purchase.

After you've established ownership of the precious metals, the gold company ships the precious metals to an IRS-approved depository.

Storing Your Precious Metals

Montana Rarities cannot store your precious metals for you as it is illegal. Therefore, when creating a precious metals IRA, all your precious metals must go to a depository.

Be wary of any gold company that offers to store your metals, and consult your custodian to find an IRS-approved depository for storing your metals.

Consider the safety and security of your metals by choosing a depository provider with no legal complaints against them. After all, your precious metals remain in the depository until you receive distributions from your IRA.

The cost of storing your precious metals is critical, too. You'll pay depository fees monthly or annually according to the organization's requirements. In addition, you'll have ongoing custodian fees, and comparing providers helps you find the best rates.

Selling Your Precious Metals

To initiate a precious metals sale with Montana Rarities, click on their "Sell Gold" tab and click the "Email Us" link to contact the company. In the email, explain what precious metals you want to sell and include the product's condition, weight, and full name.

A service representative will contact you with a cash offer, and you can accept or refuse the bid. At the bottom of their "Sell Gold" page, you'll find a price chart to help calculate how much you can expect from the offer.

If you accept their offer, they provide packaging for shipping your metals to their location and instructions on how to package them appropriately.

Remember, Montana Rarities can decrease your payment if any of your metals aren't in the specified condition.

If you receive any emails or calls about the condition, contact them immediately, or you could lose some of your payment, or they can send the items back to you without payment.

Understanding Price Structures

A buyback involves selling your precious metals purchase from Montana Rarities to the company. You can only set up a buyback if you purchased the precious metals through them.

Since they are a gold seller, Montana Rarities won't offer you the exact price of each metal because they're in business to turn a profit.

To start a buyback, you'll contact them via email and tell them what precious metals you've ordered that you want to sell back to them.

The customer service representative reviews your orders and determines the price of the precious metals you've purchased. You receive an offer, and they will explain how you receive your payment.

Review Discount Pricing

Montana Rarities has a discount pricing page that shows you which precious metals deals they have. These options require a minimum quantity you must purchase to get the discount.

For example, as of 2023, you can get a starting discount of 1.3% on silver if you buy at least 100 ounces. The base quantity for gold, platinum, and palladium is five ounces with a discount of 0.70%.

Email Montana Rarities or call their local number to get a quote for your purchase. Remember that if you make any purchases of $7,500 or more, you must send a wire transfer on the day of your purchase, or Montana Rarities may cancel your order.

They will wait until the wire transfer confirmation arrives before they prepare your shipment. Any orders of at least $1,000 qualify you for free shipping.

How you choose to receive your precious metals purchase determines how long it takes to arrive. For example, Montana Rarities use wholesale drop-shipping providers, and it takes one to four days to get your order once your payment clears.

However, if you want your order to ship from Montana Rarities' location, you can get it faster since they use UPS and FedEx.

Do They Offer Rare Precious Metals?

If you cannot find a coin on Montana Rarities' website, you can contact them and tell them the name of the coin. They search for the coin and determine if they can order it for you.

If they cannot secure the coin, customer representatives may tell you where you can find it from a different dealer or individual selling it.

Are There Special Purchases Available?

Under the "Specials" tab, you can find the current precious metals specials. These precious metals are available at spot pricing, and you must pay with either cash, check, or credit card.

If you pay for the precious metals with a credit card, you can get an additional 5% discount. The specials change frequently, and you'll have to check them before you place an order.

Montana Rarities Ratings and Complaints

Most online ratings show Montana Rarities with four to five stars and many positive customer reviews. According to their website, these reviews seem outdated since Montana Rarities doesn’t offer monthly purchase programs.

However, most reviews indicate the products are high quality, and the customer service representatives were helpful.

Conclusion

Buying precious metals gives you a tangible asset that isn’t affected by inflation and won’t lose its value over time.

However, before you can invest in these metals or an IRA funded by gold, find a precious metals company that is safe and isn’t trying to scam you.

When reviewing Montana Rarities, you’ll see that while they seem like a good company, you may find more of what you want elsewhere.

Montana Rarities is not a scam, they are a reasonable company, but we do not recommend them.  There are much better companies to work with.
